Why
is it possible to learn more in ten minutes about the Crab Nebula in
Taurus, which is 6,000 light-years away, than you presently know about
yourself, even though you've been stuck with yourself all your life?
—Walker Percy
Walker Percy worried about why the modern self was Lost in the Cosmos,
the satirical title of his meditation on how the self has become so
obsessed with the spirit of the erotic and the secret love of violence,
despite living in an age in which technology promises to cure all ills
and to map the genome of consciousness. Percy's subtitle, The
Last Self-Help Book, ironically hints at the boundaries of our
predicament: surrounded by self-help books, we lack
self-understanding; bombarded with quick answers to all our problems, we
do not know the important questions; and continually offered elaborate
fantasies, we do not understand what is real.
WP
Books is
dedicated to publishing serious works of fiction, poetry, and
non-fiction that help us reflect on our sense of displacement and that
may provide brief connections to others struggling with our common
problems.
